Aaah, the booj.

A question in the debate community I follow asked something about whether or not a person should have a second child if the first child has special needs.

I really just want to stare at the question-poser with a giant freaking slack-jawed trout look.

All children have needs, dude. Sure, some kids have significant challenges and require more hands-on stuff (I'm thinking especially of medically fragile kids or kids with significant cognitive or developmental disabilities) but umm, all kids are really freaking hard work.

In other news, I'm about to sign my big kid up for 4-6 weeks in walking casts to try to stretch out her ankle joints and heel cords. Bets on how much she's going to hate me? :)

I agree with you about the question. Argh.

Punk may hate you in the short term, but she loves you now and she'll be grateful when she's older. Best of luck with the casts!

Yes! It read like 'only capital letters Special Needs Children have special needs; as for other kids, you can have twenty, no problem - they barely have needs at all'. I'm sure she didn't mean it like that, but that's how I read it.

Yeah, that's how I read it too. I think she was probably also just thinking about really really complicated kids but then I wonder - what is "too complicated"? And my brain does not want to go there.

So really, if you have a kid with complications, you should just stop having kids? Arrrghghghgjgkj

Thanks, I hope so! (I just hope the other kids are nice.)

She has contractures in her ankle joints and hip joints (too tight; doesn't have full range of motion). The braces/casting is intending to stretch the hamstrings and gastrocneimus muscles so that she can stop walking on her toes.

Because you're lighter than air? A ballerina? Because it feels good? Because kids are odd little beings? So many good reasons. But A's reason is that she actually can't flatten her foot well because all of the muscles are too tight.
